“Hey There! I’m using WhatsApp,” will no longer announce your dependence on technology in an obvious manner. That space is about to become more interesting, as the often neglected Status message on the communication app is about to get a lot of attention. As much as, or perhaps even more than the ‘Display Picture’.
New updates in the beta version of WhatsApp hint at a major overhaul, where new functionalities will be embedded into the Status message section. One functionality among those will be the ability to reply to your contact’s status message. You may also mute and unmute status alerts for specific users, but still be able to view the muted list if you’re the silent observer kinds. The all-new ‘Status’ section will show statuses of all your contacts, except the ones you’ve muted. Also, whenever someone changes their status, you’ll receive a push notification for the same, unless specified otherwise. Your witty lines or someone else’s could become a conversation starter though, as you’ll be able to reply to statuses, a`la Snapchat Stories. This particular functionality has been observed in WhatsApp beta for Windows Phone 2.17.44.
There are a host of other functionalities lined up for the WhatsApp Status feature, among which will be the ability to auto-delete a status in 24 hours. The app’s Android version is rumored to get a separate tab for Statuses, which will sit alongside the Chats, Calls, and Contacts tab.
